Molabo Aries i50 Electric Inboard Motor
Ashton Marine Services are delighted to be the exclusive canal boat sector dealer for the Molabo Arieselectric inboard engine that is perfect for the canal boat market.
The Aries electric inboard
- The compact unit has an output of up to 50kw
- Low voltage (safe to touch)
- Simple installation process (we even provide the engine mounting kit!)
- Uses 3rd party batteries. LiFePO4 recommended
- German design and manufactured
- No belts to service
- UK wide support network – as its not high voltage – so no expensive high voltage technician required.
This really is German engineering at its best. Its state of the art, simple, reliable, and easy to support. We can even give you more power if you want to use it on rivers by simply doing a small software upgrade!
1 Engine with software controlled kw output
Unlike most manufactures of inboard electric engines Molabo based in Germany have made a single engine that can provide up to 50kw
This means we can provide a solution that:
- Is far easier to support as we don’t need to support different models
- Reduced production costs
- Minimal maintenance costs
- All development is focused on a single unit and not multiple units
- We can provide you with the power that you need now and increase if required in the future without changing the electric inboard engine in your canal boat.
Why low voltage matters
Low voltage means there is no need for a specialist high voltage technician to carry out the installation of the Molabo system and batteries.
Installation: Low-voltage cables are easier to handle in terms of measuring, clamping and wiring than high-voltage cables and do not require certified HV specialists.
Maintenance: Due to the lower voltage, low-voltage cables are less susceptible to faults and also require less maintenance compared to high-voltage cables.
Costs: Low-voltage cables are cheaper to purchase and do not require special high-voltage measurement technology such as insulation monitors.
So why are there high voltage systems ?
The simple reason is that with high voltage systems you do get performance benefits if you need a high speed propellor. At low speeds the difference is very minimal hence why a 48V system is perfect for a canal boat but a speed boat would get some benefit from a high voltage system.
Plug and play
With the low voltage system, simple to use top or side mount throttle and a mounting kit (many companies don’t offer this) Molabo have made the system easy to install.
The Display
When you are using the boat there are only 3 things that really matter ie
- Time left at current speed
- Power used
- Percentage left in the batteries
For this reason the Molabo display makes these 3 key elements easy to read on a 7” TFT touch screen as shown below:
The screen is also
- IP68 ie fully waterproof
- Has automatic brightness control
- A simple menu button on the bottom right to look at other data if required
Price
We are very aware that there is a perception that German engines are often deemed to be very good but also very expensive.
The overall cost of ownership long term is less that you would expect when you take into account the fact of no maintenance and no fuel. It is also worth mentioning that you can expect a reduction on the canal tolls if you go electric.
Considerations
As the Molabo electric inboard motor is software programmed to give any amount of Kw output to 50kw ie more than enough for a wide beam canal boat. This gives us a huge advantage as it means we give you what you need and are not limited to fixed outputs.
If you decide you want more power ie decide in the future that you will use your boat not just on canals but also rivers we simply do a software update.
We also would strongly advise that you speak to us about what prop is right for your boat as this has a huge effect on stopping distances’ and forward momentum efficiency
Support
When buying an electric inboard there is far less to go wrong than an ICE engine ( internal combustion engine) and with Molabo inboards for canal boats you also get:
- No belts to worry about
- Remote system analysis
- Remote software updates
This means we can simply connect to your system and see what’s going on in the unlikely event of a problem.
This is done by installing our fully waterproof IP67 MolaLink module as pictured below
As your system runs 48v and is classed as low voltage we can also get help to you quickly and though problems are very rare its nice to know we can help quickly if required.
